Talk about beautiful… the city of Ortigia, an island off of Syracusa, is one of the most beautiful cities on Sicily, second to Taormina. You know it’s gotta be beautiful if Dolce & Gabbana hosted their fashion show here only a few months ago. Syracusa was first discovered by the Greeks in 700 BC and contains many statues, temples and ruins dedicated to the Greeks and Greek Mythology.
My brother and sister in law were visiting, giving us the perfect excuse to visit the city again. People say to just wander and get lost in little Italian cities, and this is one you can do that for hours.
We stayed at a perfect little hotel situated in the main square giving us access to all of the town within a short walk. Once we got situated with our rooms, we wandered along the water to the Castle Maniace. Once used as a military fortress, even a prison during WWII, it also displays various art work, right now showing these beautiful blue dressed in the main ballroom (below).
The churches of Ortigia are also beautiful and unique. From bones of ancient Bishops out on display, to churches used as shelter during WWI, and open air churches found during restorations of the city in 1920. It is just beauty everywhere you look!
Of course, no Sicilian overnight would be complete without a late night dinner taking 3 hours, a few drinks, and beautiful scenery and people at night. Another amazing city with such rich history, and we are so fortunate to be able to experience it, and share it with you!
We found postcards in a little souvenir shop while walking around as well as some cute local ceramics, towels and we’re sending along our favorite Sicilian cookie- the nutella biscuit 🙂
Next Month: Pisa, Italy!
